Masonic Lodge, Woodend

This project reimagines the former Masonic Lodge in Woodend as a refined New York–style residence, carefully balancing heritage preservation with contemporary living. The original red brick façade, arched windows and chimney elements are retained and restored, celebrating the building’s civic presence within the streetscape while giving it a new residential life.

Working within a Heritage Overlay of the Macedon Ranges, the design respects the scale and character of the existing hall, limiting new built form and carefully setting back additions to maintain the prominence of the original structure. A modest extension and garage are articulated in dark metal cladding and lightweight pergola elements, creating a clear yet sympathetic distinction between old and new.

Internally, the former lodge volume is transformed into a generous, light-filled living space inspired by classic New York loft living. High ceilings, large steel-framed openings and exposed brickwork are complemented by natural materials and contemporary detailing, creating a warm, textural interior that honours the building’s history while embracing modern family life.

Where possible, the existing structure has been retained and adapted rather than replaced, reducing demolition and preserving embodied energy. The result is a three bedroom home that feels both grounded in Woodend’s heritage context and confidently contemporary—an adaptive reuse that gives new purpose to a much-loved local landmark.
