Donal Coffey is a qualified Architectural Technologist, which combines the complexity of engineering with the finesse of architecture.

Originally from Ireland, Donal gained several years of experience in medium to high density housing, before arriving in Australia in 2009. Donal continued his career with Steffen Welsch Architects and saw through numerous projects throughout his 11 years there. At the practice, there was a strong focus on sustainability and low impact homes, which is now embedded into this mindset with each and every decision in the future. In his later years at SWA, Donal lead some projects that won awards for their design and contribution to sustainable housing.

In 2019, Donal moved to the Macedon Ranges, and shortly after, joined the team at Sense of Space Architects in Gisborne. He still maintains a position at the practice and leads several projects in the area and regional Victoria. While at SOS, he quickly adapted to the more rural environment and how to respond to the site and surroundings.

Donal began Second Nature Concepts in July 2025 and with every project, he says that it’s crucial to always start with an approach from first principles. From the outset, it’s important to get a strong understanding of the clients brief and budget, which lays the foundations for a smoother process. In terms of design philosophy, Donal says that we strive to make our buildings second nature to how we live, that they should allow us to live sustainably, rather than us having to work for our buildings.

Donal lives in Gisborne with his wife Melissa and two young girls Orla and Sheena. He has developed a strong grounding in the area and have built up a rapport with the local councils, builders, consultants and other team members.
