Kyneton House II
Set within the exposed rural landscape of Kyneton, this home is shaped around a protected central courtyard that offers a sense of calm retreat from wind, sun and seasonal extremes. The architecture turns inward as much as outward, using the courtyard as a sheltered outdoor room—framing sky, greenery and filtered light while maintaining connection to the broader landscape beyond. From the street, the house presents as a low, grounded form, but internally it opens to a more intimate and considered sequence of spaces .
The use of rammed earth is central to both the character and performance of the home. Thick, tactile walls provide thermal mass that moderates internal temperatures, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it slowly as conditions cool. This not only enhances comfort but also reduces reliance on mechanical heating and cooling. The material palette is intentionally simple and robust, allowing the building to age gracefully while reinforcing a strong connection to the land.
Planning is carefully arranged to balance privacy, outlook and shared living. Bedrooms and quieter spaces are positioned along the edges, while living areas open directly onto the courtyard, creating a natural heart to the home. This configuration supports flexible, multi-generational living while maintaining clear zoning and ease of movement. The compact, efficient form and straightforward construction approach help keep costs under control, demonstrating that a home can be both grounded and enduring without unnecessary complexity
