Kyneton Extension II
This carefully considered extension to a charming weatherboard home in the heritage precinct of Kyneton demonstrates a respectful and contemporary response to its historic context. Rather than imitating the existing fabric, the new addition is deliberately separated from the original dwelling, creating a clear visual distinction between old and new. This approach allows the heritage character of the original home to remain legible, while the extension reads as a calm, modern intervention.
Orientation and site response were fundamental drivers of the design. By positioning the extension toward the southern portion of the site, the new living spaces are able to capture generous natural light throughout the day, while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding garden. Large openings and carefully placed glazing blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors, creating a seamless relationship between the living areas and the landscaped outdoor spaces.
This project is another example of our first-principles design approach, where each project begins with a careful assessment of location, context, orientation and climate. These fundamentals shape a highly functional layout, with light-filled, open living spaces balanced against more intimate and thermally efficient sleeping zones. Garden spaces are woven through the plan, providing outlook, privacy and seasonal change, while enhancing the overall sense of connection to place.
The material palette is intentionally restrained and natural, selected to provide warmth, softness and texture rather than visual dominance. Timber, muted finishes and tactile surfaces allow the architecture to sit quietly in the background, supporting everyday living without overwhelming it. The result is a contemporary extension that feels calm, grounded and timeless, while remaining sensitive to its heritage setting in Kyneton.
