New Gisborne House
This new home in New Gisborne was designed for empty nesters ready to downsize to a smaller, low-maintenance block without sacrificing space, comfort or quality. Positioned on a corner allotment within a new estate, the site is open and visually exposed to the surrounding neighbourhood. This presented both an opportunity and a challenge — to create a home that feels private and secure, while remaining open, light-filled and connected to its surroundings.
The architectural design carefully balances privacy and openness, using façade articulation, controlled openings and robust materials to create visual interest from every angle. Each elevation was considered in detail to respond to the street, neighbouring homes and views toward the Macedon Ranges.
Internally, the layout is compact and efficient, yet feels generous due to high ceilings, natural light and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living areas. The main living spaces face north, maximising passive solar gain and natural light throughout the day. Secondary openings capture the morning and afternoon sun, ensuring a comfortable thermal balance across seasons.
Materials were chosen for longevity, thermal performance and low maintenance — a palette of robust, tactile finishes that will age gracefully and stand up to the local climate. Courtyards and planted pockets are integrated within the plan, allowing the home to breathe naturally and draw the landscape inward, softening the architectural form while enhancing cross-ventilation and wellbeing.
The result is a sustainable and timeless home — simple in footprint yet rich in detail, offering its owners an easy, comfortable lifestyle with a strong connection to place.
